The Footwear Ad, Chester, CT

February 19, 2014

fine footwear-7344

Who knew that this impromptu shot could coexist as a comment on evolution AND a footwear ad ? It comes complete with a space for ad copy on the lower center/right side. (NOTE: cabin fever setting in up here in the North Country)

amish morning-5621

There’s virtually nothing in this image that couldn’t also be found in the last century or two. I’m drawn to this quality of timelessness like a moth to flame, and found it – in abundance – on a recent trip to Lancaster County.

fisher cat-4114

This was the first time I had ever seen a fisher cat. They apparently are ferocious predators, but this young female, in the stillness of death, lying on a road surrounded by the forest and pastures she roamed, belies that reputation. I feel sadness at the passing of this wild and beautiful creature, and offer a prayer for the journey.

Two Llamas, Guilford, VT

February 24, 2013

llamas-5942

Llamas are thought to have originated in the Central Plains of North America before ultimately migrating to the South American continent. They (and their smaller cousins, alpacas) have since been successfully reintroduced here.

I miss this man a lot – he was passionate, opinionated and generous, and a good friend who stayed young and connected in part through a lifetime in photography. He joined Magnum in his twenties, and remained actively involved with the organization until he passed away in 2010. His best known image was perhaps the 1955 portrait of James Dean in Times Square, called The Boulevard of Broken Dreams. He advised (admonished ??) me to slow down and truly engage a scene while photographing – it was something he had a lifetime of doing.

One of the beauties at Windsong Hill, a small horse farm overlooking the Mettawee Valley and the Three Sisters range.

Waiting, Warren, VT

October 20, 2012

This pooch waited patiently for the bulldozing work to be done; knowing perhaps a long walk along that muddy road to the woodlot, from where these logs came, might soon follow – and it did.
