I missed the flowering prime of these peony blooms, but nonetheless found a beauty even more compelling in its starkness (and playfulness – think underwater). That night a severe thunderstorm came through, and the next day, all the petals here had fallen away, leaving only those magnificent earthen ruby-colored seed pods.

This man was on a cigarette break from his job at a local restaurant as I happened to be walking by. He told me of a family gathering at a nearby inn and encouraged a visit with his photographer son who was there. I did so as it was on my way, and met his wonderful extended family – slowly coming around from a night of celebration – and took a few more portraits. (Names lost in the Great Hard Drive Crash of 2009.)
This beauty is perhaps at her finest in the washed out light and spare landscape of early spring, before the summer wraps her in green and hides her from view.
