Late Afternoon, Madison, CT

January 1, 2012

I love photographs with one foot in the world of color, and the other in black and white. This was actually taken on January 1 a few years ago.

This one, a scan from 120mm format slide film, goes back a ways.  The mood strikes me as a balanced one, all in all:  the high cloud cover is neither light nor dark,  and the nature of a ferry ride is that you’re neither here nor there.

The Marginal Way is a 1.5 mile path along the spectacular Ogunquit shoreline, and this is the view as you approach the north end.  I’m not sure that late summer day could have been any more beautiful.

Moonrise, Old Lyme, CT

June 19, 2011

The full moon in June, also known as the Rose Moon (Colonial American), Lotus Moon (Chinese), Green Corn Moon (American Cherokee Indian), and my favorite, the Moon of Horses (Celtic), rises out over the Atlantic Ocean.  The lights on the horizon line are ships moving in a southeasterly direction, left to right across the photo.

See post below.  I thought that image was the embodiment of simplicity, until this scene came along.  It works best for me, though, pushed to its photographic limit, as above.
