For anyone passing through Windham County, the unpaved River Road in Newfane Vt is definitely worth a visit. There’s probably something amazing there to photograph, or just take in, any month of the year. Here, the sap lines are still in place on the maple trees, though the season may have already passed.

This man and his machine, a log loader, were working tree trunks harvested from the forest in the background. It was a remarkably efficient operation; 20-24 foot lengths of wood were lifted to a saw remotely operated from the cab, cut in half, and then stacked for transport. He was working solo.

Hedgehog Meadow, Reading, VT

January 22, 2012

I see this meadow in the winter moonlight, and I am skiing along the tree line. Every now and again, I stop, and listen to the night. It’s an exquisite stillness, broken only by occasional sounds: a breeze shifting some branches, the hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo of a Great Horned Owl, something scurrying along in the night (maybe a porcupine?). I hear my breath, slowing.

I hope someone has really been out there, and written a poem about it.

(Believe it or not, this photograph is in color)
