Still working on that simple, elegant koan of a metaphor – our mind is like the sky and our thoughts merely clouds passing through.

Offseason, Westbrook, CT

January 14, 2017

The joint is jumping in the summer, but come the offseason, not so much.

Today I was talking about FL with a Tai Chi classmate (local Y, great class) who was telling stories of Key West: ” You have to bring another liver…”

It’s that time up here in New England when we start dreaming (and talking) about white sandy beaches and warm breezes (even though it was in the mid-50s a couple of days ago).

A magnificent, gently curved cobblestone pavilion was built at this CT park in the 1930’s by the WPA. This view is from the tunnel beneath it, on a New Year’s Day with temps in the 40’s.

Another view of the two rivers coming together, taken from Route 30. If ever there was a place to really feel the qi in the universe (ok, let’s stick to New England), this would be it.

This place was a touch of heaven yesterday, a Monday in mid-November, with the temperature a balmy 65 degrees and nary a cloud in the sky. It’s where the Rock River joins the West River, to flow eventually into the CT River in Brattleboro. The area shown here draws a huge crowd of visitors in the summer, and has finally received official designation via a road sign on Route 30: “Recreational Area”.

island-pond-2016-8418

Title compliments of my friend Mike Hamer, who grew up in this area and from whom I first heard the phrase “the fabled birches of Island Pond”. Other views (in different weather) here and here.
