There’s a bit of John Cage (4’33“) in this shot, as well as Akira Kurosawa – probably my favorite movie director.

war of the worlds-4637

Just in time for All Hallow’s Eve and the 75th anniversary of the Orson Welles radio adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel “War of the Worlds”, first published in 1898. The radio broadcast apparently frightened a number of people, but the “widespread panic” that supposedly ensued was overstated. Some people missed the opening which provided a context – that it was clearly a fiction – and the fake news broadcasts that subsequently followed did the rest. More info here.

Here are the Ventures old and new playing their signature song of the same title, originally recorded in 1963. And who knew there was surfing in ME, in September?

I only saw the cemetery – at the small grove of trees in the top center of the image – when I enlarged the photograph. Multiple gravestones, some large, suggest a number of generations buried there. Who knows when this vista first emerged from the primeval forest, and whether an act of nature or the hand of man?
